Sewing MAchine
Many different machines could be designed as a helping hand during these bustling times. That is exactly what Elias Howe did for us, but it sure wasn't easy. Elias Howe was born July 9,1819 in Spencer, Massachusetts. Growing up he worked on his families farm, but long demanding hours of physical labor weren't the best for him,due to the fact he was frail and unwell. In 1835 he began working in a cotton factory and learned the trade of being a machinist, which would soon come in handy. After a while of working in a machine shop, Elias soon came up with the idea of a sewing machine. The sewing machine took five years to develop, by 1846 the machine was patented. During the introduction of the sewing machine Howe had to deal with many people trying to steal his design and often found himself in courts. Although his machine showed a brilliant and crafty idea. The sewing machine had a curved needle and a hole at the end point which would make things a million times simpler. Howe's invention made himself the second richest man in America. The Howe's machine became a huge hit, and started the large production of clothing lines, especially for the Civil War. The invention also created many new jobs around the word because of its high demand.
