Because of the Progressive Era, there have been many benefits introduced
to the modern day world. During this time, many beneficial laws and regulations
were put into effect because of this movement. The legislature established
direct primary elections, where people could vote on who they wanted to run for
elections. This movement made the railroad companies pay much higher taxes to be
fair to the American people. It also helped break up corporate monopolies that
controlled he market and allowed more small businesses to try and earn a living
and expand their market out to potential buyers they otherwise would have never
come into contact with. Because of this movement big businesses' power became
very limited. This is around the time where women began to attain new rights they previously
weren't allowed to have. Through many petitions and protesting, a few years
after this movement ended, they were finally allowed to vote. Also around this
time is when many more immigrants than ever before started coming to America to
try and start a new life for whatever reason it may be, whether they were forced
to move due to lack of jobs in their country, safety issues, lack of food, or
the threat of prejudice. America offered a whole new beginning for many of these
people, and once they got here they usually noticed a big difference right away.
Journalists were a big part of making this possible by writing countless
articles in newspapers urging people to welcome these immigrants and help them
become used to our ways of life and fit in. Around this time there was a period
also called the Gilded Age. This time period had many problems, the most
important being the lack of power the president had at the time, and an
extremely corrupted Congress. Roosevelt's Square Deal plan was a domestic
program that was formed around three basic principles, conservation of natural
resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection.
