Editorial
The average persons daily life changed greatly since the start of the
industrial revolution. Before, they had to do most of their work by hand, but
after the industrial revolution they invented machines to do their work easier.
Sounds great right? Unfortunately for most it did not make life easier at all.
It made it much, much worse than it ever could have been. The majority of the
population of most towns worked in crowded factories that were such a health
hazard, from the start they had protests about them. The companies for decades
tried to cover up anything and everything about the working conditions in their
factories. Not only was working in these factories extremely dangerous back
then, it barely paid the workers enough to live on, let alone support their
families. Poverty had risen to an all time high, and families often had to all
live inside one small cramped house. Even young children had to try and get jobs
just to have enough money to support themselves and their families.
Overall, in my personal opinion, the benefits did not by any means
outweigh the many negatives that the industrial revolution caused. Sure the
common people had access to many useful new products to make their lives easier,
but most of the time they couldn't even afford to eat everyday, let alone
purchase expensive products from the same people that make them work in the
conditions that they do. As time went on, living conditions should have improved
as many products were invented for the sole purpose to make life easier, but for
many, they STILL lived in poverty and there was no way to get out of it. It
wasn't just a couple families per town, it was entire neighborhoods that lived
on wages that were barely enough to buy themselves food, so there was no way
anyone could have possibly afforded to actually buy the products that were
surpassed to make their lives easier, besides the few rich families during the
time.
